Ethiopia gets a new President

 Mulatu Teshome Wirtu, president of EthiopiaEthiopia's parliament Monday elected Mulatu Teshome Wirtu as the country's new President.


Teshome Wirtu, Ethiopia's ambassador to Turkey since 2006 was immediately sworn as the country's fourth president since the ruling party EPRDF took power in 1990.

 

He takes over from Girma Woldegiorgis, 89, who served two, six-year, terms.

According to Ethiopia's constitution, the ceremonial president can only serve two terms.

Prime Minsters, on the other hand, have no term limits.

Before being appointed ambassador to Turkey, Wirtu served in various ministerial positions.

His reputation as one of the most successful ambassadors soared following an increase in the number of investments from Turkey.

He was also the dean of the African diplomatic corps in Ankara, Turkey.
