Since 2008, Pillay has tirelessly spoken out against human rights abuses as UN Human Rights Commissioner, most recently on tense, dangerous visits to Syria where she has called for a greater UN observer presence.
She is careful, but not afraid, to use the words 'war crimes' and in the past fought hard for rape to count as one.
She will continue to be a prominent reminder of the strength of South Africa's justice system for another two years, with her mandate at the UN extended until September 2014.
