Photos of recent protests are circulating on social media. One of them, which went viral, suggests a complete flouting of state authority: it shows a gendarme’s cap, shed as he fled mob ­violence in M’Bahiakro on 6 March. Two days earlier, a young girl was killed in this town not far from Bouaké in central Côte d’Ivoire. It was a ritual crime commissioned by the victim’s father, and it led to a violent confrontation between protesters and the authorities.
