African Union to launch e-passport in July

By Tinishu Solomon

File photo©ReutersThe African Union will launch an electronic passport (e-passport) at its next summit in July as it prepares for a unified travel document for the continent.

The first group of beneficiaries will be AU Heads of State and government, Foreign Affairs ministers and the permanent representatives of AU member states based at its headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The continental bloc said the e-passport was expected to pave the way for member states to adopt and ratify the necessary protocols and legislation with the view to begin issuing the much expected African passport.

AU Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said the initiative was a "steady step toward the objective of creating a strong, prosperous and integrated Africa, driven by its own citizens and capable of taking its rightful place on the world stage."

The initiative, first agreed upon in 2014, falls squarely within the framework of Africa's Agenda 2063, and has the specific aim of facilitating free movement of persons, goods and services around the continent.

It will foster intra-Africa trade, integration and socio-economic development, the AU said.

The AU Heads of State and government summit will be held in Kigali, Rwanda.
