The Power of Creative Reasoning: The Ideas and Vision of John Garang - Book

John Garang was a visionary rebel who fought to transform Sudan before dying in a helicopter crash shortly after signing a peace deal in 2005.

His dream of a 'New Sudan', a reformed country in which all faiths and ethnicities would be respected, died with him as South Sudan declared its independence six years later.

Lual worked closely with 'Dr John', as he called him, and provides a reminder of the rebel leader's key ideas.

Those ideas include peace through development, the importance of agriculture and the interdependency of those living in the border areas.

He also outlines the historical phases of South Sudan's struggle and the highlights of Garang's 21-day period as Sudan's vice-president.

This book is the work of a man who deeply admires Garang, and there is no detailed examination of his human rights record.

There is some criticism of the leaders who took over after Garang's death: Garang's Sudan People's Liberation Movement "must democratise or disappear", in Lual's opinion. ●
