... And the top 30 international development think tanks in the world
The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), headquartered in Dakar (Senegal), is one of the most important institutions that contribute to knowledge production in Africa – so says the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the University of Pennsylvania (USA) in the recently published 2011 edition of its report ranking think tanks around the world.
The study was conducted by over 300 experts from various disciplines, nationalities and continents, involving 6,545 think tanks located in 182 countries through a process that lasted over eight months. The full report can be found HERE.
According to the report, CODESRIA is one of the five best think tanks in Africa, and ranked among the top 30 international development think tanks in the world. Finally, CODESRIA featured among the think tanks with the best use of the internet or social media to disseminate information and knowledge and engage the public.
CODESRIA is a pan-African institution established by African researchers in 1973 out of a desire to build an autonomous scientific community that is capable of interpreting social realities in Africa and contributing to debates on global issues. CODESRIA welcomes this ranking that places it among best think tanks in Africa, and among the best international development think tanks in the world.
This achievement is no doubt the result of the untiring efforts of nearly four decades, by many people and institutions who have worked with the Council in diverse ways towards fulfilling its mandate, i.e. the development of social science research in Africa.
There are many challenges that CODESRIA has to overcome. However, featuring so prominently in the ranking by the experts of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the University of Pennsylvania (USA) is not only an indication of the quality of CODESRIA's work, but also an encouragement to the Council to strive harder in the pursuit of excellence, which has been its guiding principle since its inception for, as the Ghanaian intellectual J. K. Aggrey (1875-1927) used to say, "Only the best is good enough for Africa".
On behalf of the Executive Committee and the staff of the CODESRIA Secretariat, and on my own behalf, I would like to thank all those who have been supporting CODESRIA, and thank the authorities of the country that houses the Executive Secretariat of CODESRIA, Senegal, for their confidence and support.
I would also like to encourage the African social science research community to continue to redouble our efforts to move African research forward and advance the production of knowledge in our continent, as part of the quest for freedom and the search for solutions to the problems of development and other global challenges.
Dr. Ebrima Sall, Executive Secretary, CODESRIA
