June 16, 2011, 2:57 pm

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisia's grain stocks are sufficient to cover the needs of the local market until the end of May 2011, a local newspaper quoted an official with the state grain agency as saying on Thursday.Durum wheat stocks will last until May 30 next year and stocks of soft wheat and barley were sufficient to last until May 15, the al-Sabah newspaper quoted Mohammad Mhedbi, distribution manager with the agency, as saying.Bad weather slashed Tunisia's grains harvest to 1.1 million tonnes this season versus 2.5 million tonnes last year.Tunisia imports mainly soft wheat and barley as it has a policy to allocate most of its fertile and irrigated land to grow durum wheat.A Tunisian Agriculture Ministry official said in August the country will import around 2 million tonnes of grain next year to make up for the shortfall in this year's crop.
