Fed up with rumours of price fixing in the dairy and bread markets in the early 2000s, the Competition Commission launched a wide-ranging investigation that busted food cartels wide open.
"My sense is that we are genuinely impacting on business behaviour," said commissioner Ramburuth.
France's Lafarge agreed to settle its case with the commission in March with a R149m ($18m) fine for fixing cement prices.
Ramburuth is not free from controversy and waved through the Walmart purchase of Massmart in 2011.
