Then the methodology:
To create the ranking of Africa's Top 200 banks, we sent out detailed questionnaires to 769 financial institutions based on the continent. Their replies are used to create a systematic ranking of Africa’s top 269 banks, based on total asset size. We publish only the top 200 banks in our list. All the data is communicated to us by the banks themselves or by their parent companies.
The numbers relate to the 2011 financial year (some from the year ending 2010). They were converted to US dollar amounts from local currency, using the exchange rates applicable
on 12 December 2011, to allow for a consistent comparison. Placings in the Rank 2010 column refer to a bank’s position in the ranking published by our sister magazine Jeune Afrique in 2011.
