Search our interactive ranking
Each year The Africa Report collates a list of the continent's Top 200 banks. These rankings, which were published in July 2011, were based on banks' 2010 financial year. Read analysis of how banks are becoming Fitter, faster and more profitable.
METHODOLOGY
To create the ranking of Africa's Top 200 banks, we send out questionnaires to 769 financial institutions on the continent. Their replies are used to create a systematic ranking of Africa's Top 269 banks, based on total asset size. We publish only the Top 200 banks in our list. All the data is communicated to us by the banks themselves or by their parent companies. The numbers relate to the 2010 financial year (some from the year ending 2009). They were converted to US dollar amounts from local currency, using the exchange rates applicable on 12 December 2010, to allow for comparison. Placings in the Rank 2010 column refer to a bank's position in the ranking published by our sister magazine Jeune Afrique in 2010.
