Methodology Top 200

To create the ranking of Africa’s Top 200 banks, we send out questionnaires to 720 financial institutions on the continent. Their replies are used to create a systematic ranking of Africa’s Top 350 banks, based on total asset size. We publish only the Top 200 banks in our list.? All the data is communicated to us by the banks themselves or by their parent companies.? The numbers relate to the 2009 financial year (some from the year ending March 2010). They are converted to US dollar amounts from local currency, using the exchange rates applicable on 31 December 2009, to allow for comparison. Placings in the Rank 2009 column refer to a bank's position in Jeune Afrique's ranking published in September 2009.
