Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love , Film (director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi), 102 min.
As Africa’s best-selling singer, Youssou Ndour won prizes in the West for his album “Egypt” in 2005, but he was shunned at home for breaking a cultural taboo: singing Islamic songs, after the much-honoured manner of the storytelling griots, but seemingly making light of them by performing as a pop star. He had not known how controversial it would be – the street sellers returned the albums and the elders turned against him. Filmmaker Chai Vasarhelyi followed him through this turbulent, emotional period for more than two years, and this is the powerful, evocative result. The film has already won several awards at festivals, and its European release was in January. |
