Bringing the mills to the fields

Readying rice for the table is a bitty process. First the rice must be threshed (removed from the plant) then dried in the sun and milled – put through a machine where the kernels are removed to get white rice. Despite a surge in the number of privately-owned mills – from 156 in 2000 to 591 in 2007 – they are often situated far away, meaning transporting the paddy (unmilled rice) by bicycle is difficult for farmers.


One innovation, developed at Uganda’s National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), has brought the mill to the farmers by mounting a mill on a truck that is driven to villages at harvest time. Piloted in 2007, the truck was met with delight by farmers and especially their wives, who were glad to have the money put straight into their hands rather than spent in bars next to the mill. NARO hopes to bring in private investors to expand the mobile mill and to invest in businesses around rice waste products. Broken grain can be crushed into porridge, and the husks, which have traditionally been burnt off in large fires at harvest time, can be sold to brickmakers to help in the drying process or else made into fertiliser.
