A political cartoonist’s job is to tell truth to power. The emperor must be told that he is naked, even if it offends him, even if we are being assured very loudly that he is fully clothed.

There will always be attempts to gag the media, such as the Daily Nation‘s refusal to renew my contract this year. The crucial point is how the press reacts to political pressure.

There have been complaints about my drawings from each administration since the Moi era, but it has got much worse over the past two years.

Gains Kenya has made in press freedom must be protected at all costs.
