Somalia: Al-Shabaab ‘is losing ground’ says President Mohamud

This week, Somali forces put an end to the 20-hour siege by the Islamist group al-Shabaab at the popular Villa Rays (Rosa) hotel in Mogadishu. The attack killed 14 people, including eight civilians. Speaking to The Africa Report, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reiterates the vow he made when he won the May elections: “Total war” against the militants, and how he plans to strengthen Somalia’s role in the region.
He says he’s got the magic bullet that will put an end to terrorism: the Somali people.
“You know, people […] in Somalia were not supporting al-Shabaab because they believe [in] their cause. They [were] with al-Shabaab because of fear,” Mohamud tells The Africa Report.
