At least one person died after a group of Yoruba Nation agitators clashed with armed police officers in Lagos on Monday. It marks an upturn in violence around issues of ethnic self-determination. February’s poll will be the first election since the country’s return to democracy in 1999 in which the major contenders for the presidency are from the three main ethnic groups.

One vehicle was also torched during the clash.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson in Lagos, said hundreds of miscreants masquerading as Yoruba Nation agitators disrupted social and commercial activities in the Ojota area of the state.
