Nigerians were held spellbound by the news that the country's Department of State Services (DSS) was trying to arrest the apex bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, over allegations of fraud, terrorism financing, and economic sabotage.

The national intelligence agency had filed an ex-parte application on 7 December 2022 to the court to allow authorities to detain the governor for questioning.
