With President Muhammadu Buhari no longer eligible to contest, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar had believed the coast was clear and decided to make a record 6th run for the Presidency. His calculation was simple – he would retain the strongholds of the PDP in the south and win over President Buhari’s northern base. One thing he didn’t foresee? Peter Obi.

In November 2022, Charles Soludo, a successor to Peter Obi as Governor of Anambra State, wrote a strongly worded statement where he dismissed Obi’s chances at the polls despite his rising popularity. He argued that Obi was not just contesting against Atiku but was widening the pathway to the victory of Bola Tinubu, the Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Peter Obi is taking votes away mostly from the PDP. Indeed, if I were Bola Tinubu, I would evengive Peter Obi money as someone heading a department of his campaign because Obi is making Tinubu’s pathway to victory easier by indirectly pulling down the PDP,” he wrote.
