Tanzania faces a number of foreign policy challenges in the region this year, analysts say, while disputes arising from the competition between China, US, and Russia might require it to balance relationships with all three.

When President Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed office two years ago this month, Tanzania’s external engagement shifted to a more outward-facing re-engagement with a variety of foreign partners.

After years of self-imposed isolationism by former president John Magufuli, Hassan has been quick to engage with foreign partners and multilateral organisations, indicating a desire to expand Tanzania’s international engagement.
