Uganda: Bobi Wine attempts a fundamental party change – will he succeed?

In an attempt to build a political party based on values and principles, National Unity Platform (NUP), the largest opposition party in Uganda led by pop star turned politician Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, recently amended its constitution, introducing a clause unprecedented in African politics. It has set term limits for all party members occupying leadership positions, including members of parliament.

Effective in 2026, all party leaders will serve a maximum of two terms. In Uganda’s politics, a term is five years, meaning leaders will be serving a maximum of 10 years.
