Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré came to power in October 2022, Burkina Faso has distanced itself from France and got closer to several non-Western countries.

The ceremony was intended to be symbolic. However, it perfectly illustrates the desire of Burkina Faso’s transitional authorities to seek out new partnerships. On 12 June, Captain Ibrahim Traoré was awarded the BRICS medal (an alliance comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) by its president, Larisa Zelentsova, in Ouagadougou.
