Teodorin Nguema Obiang is following in the footsteps of his father, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, in showing the people of Equatorial Guinea what oil money can do.
He was appointed second vice-president for defence and security in May 2012, in part to avoid French prosecution claims he bought a property with illicit funds.
This was also seen as confirmation he is being groomed for the presidency.
Meanwhile, in Congo-Brazzaville, President Denis Sassou Nguesso’s son, Denis Christel, is also a rising star.
Like Teodorin, he is also under investigation after claims he used national oil revenues to pay his personal credit card bills when he was a director of the Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo in 2007.
He entered politics and in June 2012 won a seat in the national assembly representing Oyo, after taking 99.9% of the vote.
